A frequently posted issue about printers and Windows 10 is not being able to print using the WSD port or the printer reverts to WSD from an IP setting. This appears to be a bug in the WSD port provider in Windows 10. After reading many commonly described issues where Windows 10 says the printer is offline when it isn't and the vendor software sees it online or getting the generic printer error message when printing, the conclusion is that WSD is the issue. This has been tested on many different computers with different networking configurations. It all comes back to a Windows 10 error with the use of WSD.
Noted frequently is that when many printer drivers are installed in Windows 10 they default to a WSD configuration. The common problem is displayed as a message that the print job failed with an error but with no details about the error, "error printing". Not very helpful. The printer shows online and if it is a multifunction device it may scan documents fine, but not print.Even after changing the printer from WSD to an IPv4 configuration, the driver refreshes, and it reverts to the WSD port. For some computers this will work fine, but in most cases printing eventually fails. Scanning with the WSD port often seems to be stable even when printing fails for those multifunction devices.
1. Change the port type in the printer properties to use the IPv4 printer port.
2. Disable IPv6 in the network properties of the network adapter on the computer.
3. Change the network settings on the printer to disable WSD and set your printer driver to use the IPv4 address of the printer. NOTE: This is for printers where the WSD option can be disable on the printer (HP printers) and where the printer driver automatically reverts to WSD.
These solve the problem without recurrence. This is a bug in the WSD provider software for Windows 10. Future updates to Windows 10 may resolve this issue but if you need immediate resolution you can try these options.
